Who this list is for

This guide is for travelers who want a well-reviewed base in Tokyo without reading thousands of reviews themselves. It suits couples and pairs of friends on a short city break, first-time visitors choosing between Shinjuku, Asakusa and the bay area, and anyone flying through Haneda who wants simple transfers. If you’re looking for great hotels in Tokyo that guests consistently rate highly, rather than simply the most famous names, this shortlist of Tokyo top rated hotels is a practical place to start.

It’s less useful if you’ve set your heart on a five-star stay. None of the eight hotels here carried a five-star rating at lookup time, so treat this list as a well-reviewed, value-focused alternative to the city’s headline luxury properties.

How we picked

We used Agoda partner search data for Tokyo, looked up on October 7, 2026, for a two-night stay from Saturday, November 7 to Monday, November 9, 2026, for two adults. From those results we focused on hotels with high guest review scores backed by large review volumes. We then checked location, distance from the city center, breakfast inclusion and practical details such as check-in and check-out times.

Rates and availability change constantly, so this article doesn’t quote prices. The table on this page shows the latest rates from the same search. Always confirm the final total on the booking page before paying.

The shortlist at a glance

The eight hotels fall into three groups:

  • Asakusa and Nippori: Asakusa Tobu Hotel, Almont Hotel Nippori and APA Hotel Asakusa Tawaramachi Ekimae, all roughly 3.5 to 4.1 km from the city center.
  • Shinjuku area: Hotel Gracery Shinjuku and Hotel Sunroute Plaza Shinjuku, both about 5 km from the center.
  • Airport and bay: Hotel Villa Fontaine Grand Haneda Airport, Grand Nikko Tokyo Bay Maihama and Oriental Hotel Tokyo Bay, between 13 and 16.9 km out.

Hotel notes

Asakusa Tobu Hotel

Why it made the list: Asakusa Tobu Hotel had the highest review score in this shortlist at lookup time. It had 13,742 reviews at lookup time, so that score rests on a large sample. At lookup time, it held a 3-star rating. The hotel has 253 rooms and sits about 4.1 km from the city center. The rate in our search included breakfast.

Who it suits: Travelers who care more about consistent guest feedback and a neighborhood base than about extensive hotel facilities. Check-in from 2:00 PM helps after a morning arrival.

Caveats: It’s a simpler, mid-size property than the large Shinjuku and bay hotels on this list, so check the room size and layout before booking. Check-out is at 11:00 AM.

Almont Hotel Nippori

Why it made the list: Almont Hotel Nippori ranked second for review score in this group at lookup time. It had 18,621 reviews at lookup time. At lookup time, it held a 3-star rating. The hotel sits about 4.0 km from the city center, and the rate we found included breakfast.

Who it suits: Couples who want a highly rated, reasonably central base and don’t need a full-service hotel.

Caveats: Our data has fewer property details for this hotel than for the others, including room count and check-in times. Read the room description and house rules carefully before you commit.

Hotel Gracery Shinjuku

Why it made the list: At lookup time, it held a 4-star rating. It had 30,272 reviews at lookup time, one of the largest samples on this list. The hotel opened in 2015, has 970 rooms and sits in Kabukicho, about 4.8 km from the city center. The front desk offers concierge service, express check-in and check-out, luggage storage, safety deposit boxes and a ticket service.

Who it suits: First-time visitors and travelers who want to step straight into Shinjuku’s dining and entertainment. It’s also the most service-oriented of the central picks here.

Caveats: A large hotel in a central entertainment district can mean busy lobbies and street activity late into the evening. Light sleepers may want to request a higher floor. Check-out is at 11:00 AM.

Hotel Sunroute Plaza Shinjuku

Why it made the list: At lookup time, it held a 4-star rating. It had 27,552 reviews at lookup time. Its address is in Yoyogi, within Shibuya ward, about 5.2 km from the city center. That makes it worth a look if you’re comparing top-rated hotels in Shinjuku and Shibuya.

Who it suits: Travelers who want the Shinjuku area without staying on the Kabukicho side, and who prefer a mid-size hotel with 624 rooms.

Caveats: The hotel opened in 2007 and our data lists no renovation year, so if room condition matters to you, check recent guest photos. Check-out is at 11:00 AM.

Hotel Villa Fontaine Grand Haneda Airport

Why it made the list: It had the largest review count in this shortlist at lookup time, with 46,781 reviews. It held a 4-star rating at lookup time. The hotel is at Haneda Airport, opened in 2020 and has 1,531 rooms. The rate in our search included breakfast.

Who it suits: Travelers with an early departure or late arrival at Haneda, or anyone adding a night near the airport at the start or end of a longer trip.

Caveats: At 16.9 km from the city center, it’s a poor base for daily sightseeing. Check-in is from 3:00 PM and check-out is at 11:00 AM.

Grand Nikko Tokyo Bay Maihama

Why it made the list: Grand Nikko Tokyo Bay Maihama had the highest star rating in this list at lookup time. Its review score ranked third in this group at lookup time. It had 13,545 reviews at lookup time. The hotel opened in 1990, was renovated in 2021 and has 709 rooms. Taxi and shuttle services are available.

Who it suits: Couples or families planning a relaxed bayside stay, and travelers who like a later start, since check-out is at noon.

Caveats: The hotel is in Urayasu, Chiba, about 13.0 km from the city center, so central sightseeing means a longer commute each day.

Two more worth knowing

Oriental Hotel Tokyo Bay is a bayside option that was renovated in 2025. At lookup time, it held a 4-star rating. It had 21,118 reviews at lookup time. It also offers noon check-out, but it sits 15.0 km from the city center.

APA Hotel Asakusa Tawaramachi Ekimae is the closest hotel to the city center in this search, at 3.5 km. At lookup time, it held a 3-star rating. It had 21,708 reviews at lookup time. The rate we found didn’t include breakfast, and check-out is at 10:00 AM, earlier than anywhere else on this list.

How to choose

Start with what your days will look like:

  • Sightseeing on the east side and in older neighborhoods: Asakusa Tobu Hotel, Almont Hotel Nippori or APA Hotel Asakusa Tawaramachi Ekimae.
  • Shopping, nightlife and easy transit: Hotel Gracery Shinjuku or Hotel Sunroute Plaza Shinjuku.
  • Flights at Haneda: Hotel Villa Fontaine Grand Haneda Airport.
  • Slower mornings by the bay: Grand Nikko Tokyo Bay Maihama or Oriental Hotel Tokyo Bay.

Then weigh the review score against the review volume. A strong score backed by tens of thousands of reviews is usually a more dependable signal than a slightly higher score from a smaller sample. Finally, think about distance. Cutting daily travel time often matters more on a two-night trip than an extra facility you may not use.

Booking checklist

Before you confirm, run through these points:

  • Free cancellation: Check whether the rate is refundable and note the exact cancellation deadline. Non-refundable rates may appear in the same list as flexible ones.
  • Taxes and fees: Compare the final total, including taxes and any service charges, not just the headline rate. Confirm whether any local taxes are collected at the property.
  • Room type: Our search didn’t specify a room type, so confirm the bed setup for two adults, double or twin, and check the room size before you book.
  • Breakfast: Make sure the specific rate plan you choose includes breakfast if you want it.
  • Check-in and check-out times: Times on this list range from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM for check-in and from 10:00 AM to noon for check-out. Plan luggage storage around your flights.
  • Guest details: Enter names exactly as they appear on your passports, and add your expected arrival time if you’ll be checking in late.
